Adrian Peterson will test free agent market despite the Washington Redskins wanting to bring back the veteran running back, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Peterson and the Redskins recently had preliminary talks on a new deal but nothing was concrete. Now, Peterson will seek interest from other teams and hopefully the Redskins will get an opportunity to speak to him.
At the age of 33, Peterson resurrected his career last season with the Redskins, as he turned from a late roster addition in the preseason into Washington’s workhorse. He rushed for 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Redskins expect Derrius Guice to return from a torn ACL to be their feature running back. Bringing back Peterson would not only be an insurance policy but a much-needed No. 2 running back to split carriers with Guice.
As he ventures into the open market, Peterson’s value may not be quite set until top prize Le’Veon Bell signs. Still, it’s anyone’s guess to where Peterson’s value is viewed by other teams. Despite his age, Peterson proved he could be a feature back while with the Redskins last season.
He toughed out a shoulder and knee injury and still managed to produce despite significant injuries along the Redskins’ offensive line and quarterback position. All Washington can do now is wait and see.
