Adrian Peterson is returning to the Washington Redskins on a two-year deal worth $8 million, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington and Josina Anderson of ESPN both report they had text message conversations with Peterson confirming the intended signing.
Peterson led the Redskins with 1,042 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 2018. Remarkable because of his age (33) as well as he was a late preseason add after a multitude of injuries at running back for the Redskins, including second-round pick and feature back Derrius Guice.
Peterson was the highest-graded offensive player for the Redskins by Pro Football Focus last season.
With injuries affecting Guice and fellow running backs Chris Thompson and Byron Marshall, Peterson was a workhorse. His 251 carries was his most since 2015.
Talks between Peterson and the Redskins began last month, but the veteran running back chose to test free agency before re-signing. Three days into the league’s legal tampering, Peterson and the Redskins have come to terms to a reunion.
With Peterson back and Guice expected to be cleared in time for the 2019 season, the Redskins may have a strong group along with Thompson. They also have an insurance policy with the former NFL MVP. They’ll need it as they head into next season with question marks at quarterback with Alex Smith expected to miss the season with his broken leg.
