Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is coming out of retirement and signing with the Washington Redskins. The team announced the signing Friday.
The Redskins had talks with Rodgers-Cromartie last year, but no deal was reached. He went on to sign with the Oakland Raiders, then announced his retirement after playing seven games.
He was reinstated by the NFL last month after announcing his intentions to resume his career.
Prior to his stint in Oakland, Rodgers-Cromartie, 32, played four seasons with the New York Giants and was a teammate of recent Redskins’ signing safety Landon Collins. In fact it was Rodgers-Cromartie who switched his number to 41 to allow Collins to wear the No. 21 upon being drafted by the Giants.
Rodgers-Cromartie has 30 interceptions and six touchdowns in 11 seasons in the NFL.
Josh Norman, Fabian Moreau, Greg Stroman, and Quinton Dunbar topped the Redskins cornerbacks in snaps. Dunbar was hampered with a shin injury that caused him to miss nine games and was replaced by Stroman.
However, there is a chance the signing may address the Washington’s need at free safety. This would make sense with his ability to play inside in the slot and cover ground at safety in the nickel packages.
Nonetheless, adding Rodgers-Cromartie gives the Redskins another piece to retooling its secondary as a whole.
