The Washington Nationals got their first win of the season Sunday behind a walk-off home run by shortstop Trea Turner.
Turner was facing a full-count with one out in the ninth when he took New York Mets reliever Justin Wilson deep to left to give the Nationals the 6-5 win.
The walk-off homer capped a huge day at the plate for Turner, who crushed a three-run home run in the third that gave Washington an early 3-1 lead.
He also reached base on a fielder’s choice and later collected his fourth stolen base of the season. He finished 2-for-5 at the plate, driving in four runs and scoring three times.
Washington (1-2) topped the Mets (2-1) in the series finale after losing the first two games of the series with Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg on the mound. Sunday, top free agent pickup Patrick Corbin got the start at pitcher for the Nats, facing Zach Wheeler.
Corbin allowed two runs, seven hits, and two walks while striking out four in six innings of the work. He left the game with a 5-2 lead. However, the Mets rallied with three runs in the eighth of another shaky bullpen performance for the Nationals.
Turner and the Nationals would not be denied. With the clutch homer, Turner is now hitting .385 to start the season with a .923 slugging percentage.
