As speculation brews of the Arizona Cardinals drafting Kyler Murray with the first overall pick and subsequently trading last year’s first-round pick Josh Rosen, the Washington Redskins have surfaced as favorites to land Rosen.
However, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network stated Rosen won’t be traded before the draft, and the Redskins are “not actively chasing” Rosen, as they’re interest is not serious.
At this time of year it’s hard to decipher what’s real information or what are smokescreens. As the draft approaches, there has been reported indications that the Redskins were interested in landing Rosen in a potential trade.
Redskins’ insider John Keim of ESPN.com recently reported there is a “solid chance” the Redskins would trade for Rosen. Peter King of NBC Sports called the Redskins the “favorite in the clubhouse” for Rosen.
Nonetheless, all eyes are on whether the Cardinals opt for Murray with the first overall pick and what team ultimately lands Rosen in a trade.
The Redskins are in need for a long-term fix at quarterback with Alex Smith, who they signed last year to a four-year extension worth $94 million after acquiring him in a trade, is recovering from a devastating leg injury that could keep him out of action for all of the 2019 season and possible beyond. Bringing in a quarterback under a rookie scale contract while Smith is on their cap, is imperial for the Redskins.
As it stands, Case Keenum and Colt McCoy are set to compete for the starting quarterback position heading into training camp.
Washington, who currently holds the No. 15 pick overall, is combing through just about all the top quarterback prospects for this year’s draft except for Murray. They have met or planned to meet with the likes of Dwayne Haskins, Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Will Grier, and Jarrett Stidham among others before the draft.
The intrigue on what the Redskins will ultimately do with the quarterback position will increase with this latest report until something official is made.
