Alex Ovechkin was heated from the moment that officials waived off a potential game-tying goal in the third period. And it carried over in the waning moments of Game 6, leading to his ejection with about one minute remaining in the game.
The outcome was all but decided as Carolina jumped to a 5-2 lead following what the Capitals thought was a game-tying goal with about 9 1/2 minutes remaining in the third period. However, the referee waived off the goal as it was deemed Ovechkin interfered with Carolina’s goaltender Petr Mrazek.
Carolina quickly added two more goals, including an empty-netter. Then Ovechkin was whistled for a slashing call. From there Ovechkin’s boiled over, mocking the referees by clapping. He was ultimately ejected from the game, as the packed PNC Arena in Raleigh cheered on.
