Jay Gruden Says Dwayne Haskins Will Have Opportunity to Compete for Redskins Starting QB

The Washington Redskins landed the quarterback of the future, when Dwayne Haskins fell right into their lap at the 15th pick overall.

Haskins enters Redskins Park with the keys of the franchise in hand. While he only started one year in college at Ohio State, his new head coach essentially said he will be given the opportunity to start as a rookie in Washington.

Haskins’ competition entering training camp will be Case Keenum, who the Redskins acquired in a trade in March, and Colt McCoy, who set to return from a broken fibula he suffered in December.

Both Keenum and McCoy are in the last year of their contracts. And with Alex Smith’s career on pause after his devastating compound fracture in his leg, Haskins surely will have all the opportunity to start right away.

That’s especially considering he reportedly has the eye of owner Dan Snyder. The only thing that will complicate the matter for Haskins is his head coach.

The upcoming season will be Gruden’s sixth as the Redskins head coach. He has one playoff appearance in the previous five seasons and is coming off back-to-back 7-9 seasons. Considering all things, Gruden is hard-pressed to win now.

Odds are that will be hard for Gruden and the Redskins to do with a rookie quarterback, one who started just one year in college. Keenum has had relative success in the NFL despite being a journeyman. However, team president Bruce Allen and Snyder picking Haskins was with the team’s best interest long-term not now.

That may be the internal battle moving forward among the Redskins’ decision makers. Unless, Haskins blows everyone away in the competition.
