The Washington Redskins were the talk of the first-round of the NFL Draft, landing two potential cornerstone players Thursday.
First, the Redskins drafted former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the 15th pick overall. Then they traded the 46th pick overall and a 2020 second-round pick to Indianapolis for the 26th overall pick, as Washington selected EDGE Montez Sweat from Mississippi State.
It was a great haul for the Redskins, that almost didn’t happened. Head coach Jay Gruden admitted they considered selecting Sweat at No. 15, per John Keim of ESPN.
The Redskins opted for Haskins at No. 15 with his potential being the deciding factor, according to Gruden.
Nonetheless they addressed two huge positions of needs, a quarterback and an edge rusher all in the first round.
Haskins was arguably the best quarterback in this year’s draft, and the Redskins stayed true sitting at No. 15. Sweat would have been a top-10 pick if not for concern over a possible heart condition. He dropped in the draft and their gamble passing him up at No. 15 paid off in a great way for them.
