Colt McCoy’s recovery from a broken fibula has taken longer than expected. The Washington Redskins quarterback has underwent three surgical procedures since his broke his leg in December against the Philadelphia Eagles.

His most recent surgery occurred last month and will force him to miss OTAs. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden acknowledged such while appearing at the team’s charity golf event Monday. When asked when he will return, Gruden stated “hopefully training camp,” according to John Keim of ESPN.

The Redskins had initially hoped McCoy would have returned during the 2018 season, as they had faint playoff hopes. As their chance vanished with a Week 16 loss to Tennessee, McCoy was held out of the season finale.

However it was later revealed McCoy needed a second procedure after he was spotted as the Grand Marshall during the IndyCar Classic in March in Austin, Texas. Gruden later admitted the Redskins may have rushed McCoy back trying to get him back under center at the conclusion of last season.

When McCoy was not present at the start of OTAs, it was revealed he underwent a third procedure on the broken leg.

McCoy was set to compete for the starting quarterback position with recently acquired Case Keenum. The Redskins also drafted Dwayne Haskins in the first round of last month’s NFL Draft. Haskins presumably will also join the competition.

As McCoy struggles with health surround the leg, there could be simply a two-man race going into training camp.
