Next month Zion Williamson will join the likes of Anthony Davis and John Wall, as he is set to become join them as a first overall pick in the NBA Draft.
It was Davis and Wall who inspired Williamson in a large way in how he conducts himself. While at Duke, Williamson made it a point to sign autograph’s of “every kid” that approaches. It’s a matter he once discussed while in high school.
New York Post’s Marc Berman pointed out how Williamson referenced autograph snubs from Davis and Wall that guided him to granting every kid’s wish of an autograph during a 2016 documentary.
“When I was little, I looked up to high school players, and I would want their autograph. And sometimes I couldn’t get it, and I’d just be hurt. I said when I grew up, I don’t want to be like that. I want to be able to sign every kid’s autograph — no matter how long it takes me …
“I try to sign every kid’s autograph because I don’t want to turn a little kid down because I know it’ll hurt them. It hurt me. Anthony Davis, John Wall turned me down, so I try to sign everybody’s.”
Williamson could be teammates with Davis, as the New Orleans Pelicans hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Davis reportedly prefers to be traded, but if the two are indeed teammates one could bet Williamson’s claims will be a topic of discussion between the two.
