Not many seventh-round picks enter OTAs with as much anticipation as Washington Redskins cornerback Jimmy Moreland. Despite being the 227th overall pick in last month’s NFL Draft, there is expectation Moreland will make a great case to make the Redskins’ 53-man roster and contribute early-on.
That expectation appears to be justified, as the former James Madison product impressed with three interceptions during OTAs practice Wednesday, including a walk-off pick-six off first-round pick Dwayne Haskins.
Redskins defensive coordinator Greg Manusky said he had never seen a three-interception day in a practice like Moreland had Wednesday.
Known as a “ball hawk” while playing with the Dukes, Moreland set school records with 18 interceptions and six pick-sixes. He gravitates to the football. Concerns over his small fame of 5-foot-10 and 174 pounds played a factor in him dropping to the seventh-round. Additionally, he was dismissed from the team in 2016 for petty larceny charges and violating team rules.
If the way Moreland has played throughout OTAs is any indication of what type of football player he will be, the Redskins may have got one of the biggest steals of this year draft.
