The Washington Redskins were without left tackle Trent Williams when their mandatory three-day mini-camp started Tuesday. Head coach Jay Gruden confirmed reports that Williams is holding out for a new contract.
Gruden said Williams’ absence is between him, his agent, and the organization. He acknowledged that he spoke with Williams about the situation.
“Trent knows we all want him back,” Gruden said (h/t Tarik El-Bashir of the Athletic). “I want him back in the worst way. I know his teammates want him back But, at the end of the day there is a business side to pro football, and that’s what he’s about right now.”
Williams signed a five-year deal worth $68 million back in 2015. At the time it was the largest deal for an offensive tackle in NFL history. However, the market has since changed. Williams is now the seventh-highest paid left tackle, according to Spotrac.
Gruden added that Williams would not have been able to practice this week as he recovers from a procedure to remove growth on his scalp earlier in the spring.
Addressing the situation is imperative for the Redskins. Williams has been plagued by various injuries in the last three seasons. With him turning 31 before training camp, longevity on the playing field is questionable. However, he still is one of the more dominating left tackles in the league and his athleticism is very rare.
Washington will have to decide if it’s worth making another large investment in Williams at this point in his career.
