The Washington Wizards have a new target in their search for president of basketball operations. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Washington is set to make Masai Ujiri a very lucrative offer to lure him from the Toronto Raptors.
The Wizards are wasting no time at least letting the intentions be known, as the Raptors are just hours removed from clinching their first-ever NBA championship. Ujiri was the architect of building Toronto’s championship team.
Wizards owner Ted Leonsis will seek permission from the Raptors to meet with Ujiri. The Wizards are set to offer $10 million annually to him for a total of six years, according to Fred Katz of the Athletic.
Washington fired Ernie Grunfeld after 16 seasons on Apr. 2. The team has interviewed Tim Connelly, Danny Ferry, Troy Weaver, and Gersson Rosas. However, Connelly opted to remain with the Denver Nuggets as their president of basketball operations after he was offered the Wizards’ position. Rosas opted to become the same position as the Minnesota Timberwolves shortly after meeting with the Wizards.
Their continued search was put on hold awaiting the Raptors concluding their NBA championship run. Now, the Wizards will have hope their pursuit will be enough to entice Ujiri to leave the team he just built into an NBA champion.
