Jay Gruden is entering his sixth year as the Washington Redskins head coach. He could do so with a rookie quarterback, as Dwayne Haskins is set to compete for the starting quarterback position with veterans Case Keenum and Colt McCoy.

Haskins has a fair chance to be the Week 1 starting QB for Washington. His work throughout off-season practices have earned high praises from onlookers. However, it’s rare to see a coach possibly needing a playoff run to save his job turn to a rookie quarterback, especially one that started just 14 games in college.

But, according to the Redskins’ senior vice president of player personnel, Doug Williams, Gruden won’t be the only person making the decision on who will start to open the season.

“I know thereā€™s words out there that [Haskins] might end up starting, and that could happen, but at the end of the day thatā€™s going to be on Jay, myself and probably Bruce [Allen] and the owner and what he does during preseason and to see where we are as a team to make that decision,” Williams told Steve Wyche of NFL Network.

Yes, Williams admitted that both team president Bruce Allen and owner Dan Snyder will be involved in the decision to who is starting at quarterback.

Owners and team execs usually have some input in who starts especially at quarterback. However, the headline will certainly draw ire from Redskins’ faithful. There is not a lot of trust in neither Allen nor Snyder from fans. Them two having input is a bit worrisome.

Keep in mind rumors have suggested it was Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder who pushed the most to draft Haskins. Gruden admitted the team considered drafting EDGE Montez Sweat with the 15th pick overall in April’s NFL Draft. However, they ultimately sided with picking Haskins. Fortunately, for anyone who preferred Sweat, the Redskins were able to trade back into the first round and select Sweat at No. 26.

It may be safe to assume that if neither Keenum nor McCoy become the clear-cut front-runner through training camp and preseason, the job could be Haskins’ to lose. We shall see…
