The long recovery to normalcy for Alex Smith took a huge step recently. His wife, Elizabeth, shared through her Instagram account, that the Washington Redskins quarterback had the external fixator removed from his broken leg after eight months.

“The last 8 months have been nothing short of crazy,” Elizabeth Smith captioned on her IG post. “Although it’s not over, today is a big milestone. We are shedding the weight Alex has been carrying (literally and figuratively). It’s one step closer to the goal. The resilience, determination and mental fortitude of this man is unmatched.”

Smith suffered a gruesome compound fracture last November in a game against the Houston Texans while being sacked. He broke his fibula and tibia on his right leg.

He since had multiple surgeries to combat a post-operation infection that occurred due to the type of injury he sustained. One of those surgeries included the placement of the external fixator.

While it’s expected Smith will miss the 2019 season as he continues to battle through his career-threatening injury, he stated his plan is to return to the football field.

“That’s the plan,” Alex Smith told FOX 5 DC’s Angie Goff in a June interview. “Steps. I’ve got to conquer some more steps before I get there. Learn to run again. That’s a big one. I’m already throwing. I already feel like throwing is not a problem. I feel like I can throw, but dropping (back), moving around, all that kind of stuff, change of direction.”
