Washington Redskins left tackle Trent Williams is not expected to report to training this week, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
Williams did not show to mini-camp in June, as reports surfaced that he was looking for a new deal with two years remaining on his five-year, $68 million deal. A report later surfaced that Williams was also upset at how the team handled his medical scare which resulted in a growth being removed from his scalp early in spring and a subsequent surgery last month.
As Ian Rapoport stated, the matter may be the fact that Williams must be cleared to participate in training camp.
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said during mini-camp that Williams “knows we want him back.”
Meanwhile, team president Bruce Allen said he knows what the truth is behind Williams’ saga in June as well.
Teammate Morgan Moses backed Williams saying “His scare is one you never want to have, but you’ve got to take care of yourself.”
While exactly what the truth is behind Williams’ impending absence may not be known, the fact of the matter is this certainly will create a distraction going into training camp for the Redskins.
With Ty Nsheke in Buffalo, and second-year swing tackle Geron Christian still recovering from a torn MCL suffered last season, not having Williams looms even larger.
There are many underlining stories going into Richmond for the Redskins this season. Who will win out the starting quarterback battle between Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, and Dwayne Haskins? Will running back Derrius Guice get healthy enough to get on the football field? Who will start at inside linebacker? How Landon Collins fits with his new team? And what to make of the wide receiver group?
Yet, all will pale in comparison to the saga that is growing with Trent Williams and the Washington Redskins.
Is it all about money? Or is it deeper and personal that surrounds how the Redskins medical staff handled his serious medical situation? Can a new contract or heart-to-heart between the left tackle and team ease the tension?
It appears that only Williams and the team can answer that. Meanwhile, all eyes will be glued to the situation until there is a definitive answer.
