Russian boxer Maxim Dadashev has died from injuries sustained in his fight Friday at MGM National Harbor, according to ESPN. He was 28.

Dadashev entered the lightweight bout against Subriel Matias with the record of 13-0. However, he endured repeated blows to the head, leaving his trainer, Buddy McGirt, no choice but to stop the fight after the 11th round.

Following the fight, Dadashev needed help leaving the ring, and collapsed before making it to the dressing room. He also began to vomit, and was taken out of the arena on a stretcher and ambulance to the hospital.

Maxim Dadashev was rushed to UM Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly, Maryland, where he underwent a two-hour surgery to relieve bleeding on his brain. He was placed in a medically induced coma following the surgery to allow time for the brain swelling to subside.

A native of Saint Petersburg, Russia, Dadashev is survived by his wife and son.
