Looking for depth at left tackle, the Washington Redskins will host free agent Donald Penn, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Cornerstone left tackle Trent Williams has not reported to training camp. And swing tackle Geron Christian unable to participate in Day 1 practice while recovering from a torn MCL, the Redskins are in dire need someone to man the blindside of Washington’s quarterbacks.
Ereck Flowers started at left tackle in Williams’ absence Thursday which was not the plan when he signed with the Redskins.
The Redskins’ initial plan was to have Flowers play left guard, but with both Williams and Christian out, they had to turn to the struggling failed top-10 pick of the New York Giants.
Penn, 36, spent the past five seasons with the Oakland Raiders after seven seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Penn was moved to right tackle last season after losing his starting position at left tackle to rookie Kolton Miller. Then, Penn was placed on injured reserve after four games with a season-ending groin injury.
He was released in March following the signing of Trent Brown.
Penn will get a workout with the Redskins to show if he still has something left in the tank. A signing would ease some of the concerns Washington may have with Williams still not being in Richmond.
