Ereck Flowers will start training camp at left tackle for the Washington Redskins, as Trent Williams remains absent.

Gruden still feels optimistic that Williams will show up to training camp “shortly,” however the team will move on with Flowers as the top left tackle.

This puts the Redskins’ initial plan of Flowers playing left guard on hold, as they need an experienced tackle to work the blindside of Case Keenum with the first unit.

Fourth-round pick Wes Martin will benefit from Flowers’ move to tackle, as the rookie out of Indiana will start at left guard. Getting the reps is huge for his development.

But the focus is on Williams’ situation, no matter what the reasoning, medical or contract related. Having a struggling failed top-10 draft pick such as Flowers protecting the blindside of Case Keenum, Dwayne Haskins, or Colt McCoy, whomever gets the start at quarterback.

Ereck Flowers had noticeable struggles in minicamp filling in for Williams. If he does not show improvement, an already concerning situation may get worse until Williams’ issues are resolved and he is at camp.
