For the course of two decades the saying “Dagger!” has been synonymous with Steve Buckhantz calling Washington Wizards games. Unfortunately, he was recently replaced as the team’s play-by-play announcer by NBC Sports Washington to the chagrin of many Wizards fans.
Justin Kutcher will replace Buckhantz when the Wizards season starts this fall. Kutcher will have to figure out a catchphrase of his own for DC basketball fans, as Buckhantz gave a stern warning to any future announcers of the Wizards that dares to use “Dagger!”
Buckhantz has been granted the trademark, and the possibility of another announcer using it is very slim. However, as Buckhantz continues to voice his displeasure with how NBC Sports Washington handled his removal, this just adds fuel to the fire.
Judging by the responses on Twitter, he has a crowd of supporters behind him.
