Alex Smith arrived to Day 1 of the Washington Redskins training camp, riding a cart while wearing a large walking boot with crutches.
Smith was placed on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp. He is not expected to neither participate in practice nor play any during the 2019 season.
Still, the Redskins quarterback was at training camp in Richmond, VA to show support to his teammates. While he won’t play his presence could loom large for the rest of the Redskins quarterbacks.
Smith will participate in team meetings and be on the sideline adding his expertise to the three quarterbacks — Dwayne Haskins, Case Keenum, and Colt McCoy — who are vying to be the Week 1 starter.
Meanwhile, Smith will continue towards the plan of getting back on the football field at some point. Even if that’s not the case, he is under contract until 2022, and his salary is guaranteed for this season and 2020.
He recently had an external fixator removed from his broken leg after wearing the device for eight months following a series of surgeries related to his compound fracture he suffered last November in a Week 11 game against Houston. The road to recovery will be a process, and while he endures it, Alex Smith will be close to the Redskins team as possible.
