It’s training camp, but the Washington Redskins may have found a very huge steal in cornerback Jimmy Moreland. The seventh-round rookie has shown flashes of his potential through the first week or so of practices.
Tuesday, Moreland shined his brightest with two interceptions. The highlight of his evening occurred when he jumped a wheel route by running back Chris Thompson, and made a leaping interception off quarterback Case Keenum.
Fluid hips, awareness to sniff out the route, and agility to backpedal and then get in position for the leaping snag were all on display from Moreland.
Moreland’s second pick was more of his anticipation. Rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins telegraphed the out throw, and was late in his release. Moreland being the ball hawk he is, made the play jumping on the floated pass and was off to the races.
Jimmy Moreland will have to translate his skill set to actual game play during preseason, however, if he does he will put pressure on an already loaded group of cornerbacks for playing time.
Washington is loaded at cornerback with Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, Fabian Moreau, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who will play some nickel packages at slot corner, and Greg Stroman, last year’s rookie standout. Yet, Moreland continues to stick out among the crowded group.
