As Trent Williams continues his holdout from the Washington Redskins, each day generates more speculation about the heart of the issue between the left tackle and team.
The latest now suggests that the Redskins have had trade discussions with teams around the league and the New England Patriots are expected to join in the discussions, according to Jeff Howe of the Athletic.
When asked about the trade rumors between the Redskins and Patriots, Trent Williams’ agent told Sherree Burruss of NBC Washington “No comment.”
Williams skipped mandatory mini-camp in June, drumming up a multitude of reports surrounding his absence. Depending on the source, Williams wants a new deal, and may be upset with how the Redskins medical staff handled his medical scare with a growth that had to be removed from his scalp.
According to Jason La Canfora, Williams’ holdout is more about medical situation than money. He added Williams does not intend to play for the Redskins again and does not trust team president Bruce Allen.
John Keim of ESPN, recently seconded La Canfora on the matter being more about the handling of his medical issue than money while appearing on 106.7 the Fan. And he has heard that Williams has told people close to him he did not want to play for Washington.
“Yes. But I would say, like, I have heard some of those things, too,” said Keim. “Like in recent days especially, more so, that, yes, he has told some people that that might be the case. But even some of those people aren’t convinced that when push comes to shove, that he would be elsewhere. And trust me, I’m not saying anything about Jason’s stuff. I’m not shooting it down at all.”
Still that’s a lot speculation, although Washington signed veteran left tackle Donald Penn Wednesday in lieu of Williams’ holdout. Penn has 174 starts over the course of his 12-year career.
It’s safe to assume, Penn isn’t just a camp body given his experience and quality of play throughout his career.
One thing is for sure each day Williams holds out adds to the saga that has one of the best left tackles in the NFL not participating in training camp.
