Despite Trent Williams wanting to be traded, the Washington Redskins are hoping that fines will force the left tackle to report to the team, according to the Washington Post.

The Redskins could fine Williams $40,000 each day he doesn’t show up to training camp and the preseason, according to the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement. That means Williams is already facing $280,000 in fines. The total could grow to over $1 million if he chooses not to show up during training camp and preseason.

Williams can lose an additional $1 million in guaranteed bonus.

According to the report, Williams asked for a trade on June 1, but the team turned down the request. He then asked for more money, which the team declined as well, leading the saga dragging into training camp.

Williams has had issues with the Redskins going as far back as last year when the team opted to draft offensive tackle Geron Christian in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Among other things, a medical scare that involved a growth being removed from his scalp frustrated Williams, as he contends the team’s medical staff misdiagnosed the severity of the growth.

The relationship between he and the team seems fractured, and Williams does not want to return to the team. However, the Redskins are optimistic that Williams will ultimately report and return to the team that drafted him in 2010 and he has made seven straight Pro Bowls with.

A report by the Athletic Wednesday stated Washington has had discussions with other teams about trading Williams, however, the Washington Post says the team is “not actively shopping” him.
