The Washington Redskins and Trent Williams are in a standoff, as the left tackle remains a holdout from training camp. Trade rumors have surfaced as Williams has reportedly vowed not to return to the team that drafted him 2010. Still, Gruden doubts Washington would result in moving arguably the best player on the team.

When asked on the possibility of the Redskins trading Williams, Gruden answered, “I would seriously doubt that, so no,” per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.

Gruden was asked if he had any idea of what it will take to get Williams to report to camp.

“I do not have any idea what it would take,” Gruden answered per 106.7 the Fan’s Craig Hoffman. “If I did, he would be here.”

Gruden added that he is still “very optimistic” that Williams will return to the team. However, when asked why he felt so optimistic, Gruden ended the presser with a smile, according to Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post.

As the Williams’ saga continues, the Redskins are reportedly hoping the fines they can apply via the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement will force him to report to the team.

Meanwhile, Washington signed veteran Donald Penn earlier this week as an insurance policy in case Trent Williams does not return in time for the 2019 season.
