The Washington Redskins released an unofficial depth chart Sunday with Colt McCoy as the top quarterback while rookie Dwayne Haskins was listed third behind Case Keenum. However, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden contends don’t put too much value in the depth chart heading into their first preseason game.

“I was forced to make it,” Gruden told reporters per Matthew Paras of the Washington Times. “That’s for the media and for me to come up and answer these questions… It means nothing at this point.”

McCoy, Keenum, and Haskins have shown good flashes of their strengths and what they bring as a starter. However, each have also shown flashes of areas of concerns, according to Gruden.

Gruden has previously stated that he will wait until Tuesday to name a starter and the quarterback rotation for Thursday’s preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.

By all accounts, no one has stood out as the clear-cut best option of the trio. McCoy has the most experience among the three, but injuries and being primarily a backup throughout his four seasons with Washington.

Keenum has the most experience as a starter during his career, however, he is learning a more complex system in comparison to what he was asked to do in his more recent stints in Minnesota and Denver.

Haskins is a rookie and the team’s designated future quarterback. All indications are the team is no rush to throw him out on the field as a starter until they deem he is ready to permanently have the position.

Nonetheless, how each performs during the preseason will go a long way to determining who will start Week 1. And when media can put more value into who is QB1.
