Colt McCoy will miss his second straight preseason game, as his leg injury from December continues to hamper him. Despite being a full-go at the start of training camp, the Washington Redskins are unsure when McCoy will be able to play in an actual game.
“Right now he’s not able to do much,” Redskins head coach Jay Gruden admitted per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.
McCoy suffered a broken fibula in a December game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Redskins held out hope that he could return before the season ended, if they were still in playoff contention. He got rushed back by the team, all to no avail as the Redskins fell out of playoff contention before he could return.
Unfortunately, the rush to get McCoy back on the field ultimately did him more damage. In the off-season, McCoy had to undergo additional surgical procedures to correct the injury, a total of three operations.
After missing OTAs and mandatory mini-camp as he recovered, McCoy has been a full participant for much of training camp with a couple of days rest. However, McCoy is struggling to use his injured leg through his mechanics.
“First and foremost we have to get that leg healthy to where he’s confident he can step into some throws and really push off that leg, and right now, you can see it’s been a little bit of an issue for him,” Gruden added via Matthew Paras of the Washington Times. “I don’t think he’s very far away, but I think it’s best at this time to hold him out and get some treatment.”
Case Keenum will get the start against the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday for a second straight game. Rookie Dwayne Haskins will be second to enter the game. Meanwhile recently signed undrafted free agent Jalan McClendon will play third at quarterback with Colt McCoy unable to go.
Gruden recently said he would like to have a starting quarterback in mind for the regular season following the third preseason game. With McCoy yet to get on the field and still struggling through his injury, it’s hard to imagine his chances of starting Week 1 are high.
