Washington Redskins slot receiver Trey Quinn continues to be bothered by a thumb injury that will keep him out of his second straight preseason game. Thursday’s contest against the Atlanta Falcons is supposed to be a dress rehearsal for starters ahead of the regular season, but Quinn will have to sit on the sidelines and watch. That’s something that the second-year pro out of SMU is not happy about.

“I wanna freakin’ play. I mean I want to get out there just in general,” Quinn told reporters (h/t 106.7 the Fan.) “I know they don’t count, but to be honest with you, I mean I want to get out there and compete. And whatever it takes to win a sh*t ton of games – to use your language – this year, I’m about that. So come the Eagles Week 1, I want to be ready to win.”

Quinn said he was actually injured during pre-game warmups before their preseason opener against Cleveland while fielding punts.

Tuesday, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said there are “high hopes” Quinn will be ready for Week 1 against Philadelphia. Quinn said that there’s no question he will be out there against the Eagles.

“Yeah, I’m out there,” Quinn said in response to a question if he would play Week 1. “Don’t even ask that question, man. Don’t ask that question.”

Hopefully, the Redskins holding out Quinn is just precautionary. He is slated to be the starting slot receiver, a position he has locked up, according to Gruden. However, considering Washington’s recent history dealing with injuries, it’s a wait-and-see game.

Quinn’s rookie season was marred by an ankle injury that landed him on injured reserve twice. He appeared to have that behind him and ready for a big season lined up primarily inside. Now, his thumb issue just adds to the hiccups the 2018 Mr. Irrelevant has had to endure in his very short NFL career.

Last season, he played just over 10 percent of the Redskins’ offensive snaps. This preseason he has been relegated to 10 snaps. Reps are key for a young developing player, something Quinn hasn’t had many of thus far.

“I like reps. I freakin’ love football,” Quinn said. “I don’t need ’em, but I want ’em. I like getting out there. I get aggravated not being out there. I get pretty pissed off. I’m one of the guys that like to be out there and practice, get the reps and then go in there prepared for the game.”
