Dwayne Haskins may not be the starting quarterback for the Redskins Week 1 of the regular season, but he will start the preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens. Washington’s head coach Jay Gruden announced Monday.
Haskins was most likely going to be in this spot no matter what, starting the preseason finale. However, with Colt McCoy likely to miss the first couple of weeks of the season, Haskins will presumably be the backup to Case Keenum.
Haskins needs the reps. He has had an up and down preseason but has gotten better each game. The flashes weren’t enough to get him the nod for the regular season start, but he will have the keys to the franchise in due time.
Keenum along with the rest of the Redskins’ starters will not play in the game. Of course that means Haskins will be protected by the second unit offensive line. With the lack of depth across the line with Trent Williams holding out from the team, there’s concern of how well Haskins, the pegged franchise quarterback of the future, will be protected.
“Our lineman who will play in this game are quite capable of protecting him and opening up some lanes for the running game,” Gruden said per Redskins.com.
Haskins will get the bulk of the work in the game before turning over the signal calling to fourth-string quarterback Jalan McClendon.
