Sometimes one game can be the difference in making a team in the NFL. That is the case for Cam Sims, as the Washington Redskins have released the talented young wide receiver.
Throughout training camp and the first couple of weeks of preseason, Sims looked to be a lock on the Redskins’ 53-man roster. However, he struggled mightily in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Baltimore Ravens, dropping three passes — two on the same drive — from Dwayne Haskins.
Last season Sims made it through final cuts as an undrafted rookie out of Alabama. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the first game of the regular season. Sims battled back for this year’s training camp and was expected to be one of the receivers to make the team.
However, the Redskins had 11 wide receivers had played in NFL games or had the potential of being an NFL-caliber receiver, making the competition steep. One bad game for Sims overrode a strong training camp, especially when receivers like Steven Sims Jr. stood out as a receiver and special teams specialist.
Not even the impending release or trade of Josh Doctson was enough to keep Cam Sims on the Redskins’ 53-man roster.
