Former Washington Redskins wide receiver Josh Doctson went unclaimed on the NFL’s waiver wire and now is a free agent, free to sign with any team this season.

Doctson was waived by the Redskins Saturday as part of their final cuts to get down to a 53-man roster. Washington drafted Doctson 22nd overall in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, he never quite lived up to the build.

His rookie season was marred by an Achilles injury that limited him to two games. He returned in 2017 but struggled to build chemistry with then-Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins. In 2018, Washington traded for Alex Smith while Cousins left in free agency, yet Doctson failed to break out.

Washington declined a fifth-year option in the spring for the 2020 season and with the team retooling its wide receiver position, Doctson no longer was part of their future plans. Saturday his time in Washington came to an end as he was among 34 players cut.

Fellow 2016 first-round wide receiver LaQuan Treadwell also went unclaimed off waivers. The Minnesota Vikings cut tide with their failed bust as well.

In three seasons with the Redskins, Doctson had 81 receptions for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns with a 50 percent catch rate.
