Two weeks after receiving a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit from Atlanta Falcons safety Keanu Neal, Washington Redskins tight end Jordan Reed remains in the concussion protocol. Head coach Jay Gruden acknowledged the fact to reporters Monday.
Last week, Gruden pitched a different tune as he seemed confident Reed would be fine in time for their preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately, concussions have no timetable and Reed is at the mercy of his symptoms and clearance from the medical staff.
Per usual, Reed is being counted on to be the prime target in the Redskins offense. However, this would be his seventh documented concussion since 2010 when he was in college at Florida. He has gone through a series of injuries throughout his seven-year career that has prevented him from playing in a full 16 games in a season.
When healthy he is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. He has 329 receptions for 3,371 yards and 24 touchdowns in 65 career games. He also has a remarkable 73.9 percent career-catch rate.
