The Washington Redskins added their second former Philadelphia Eagles player in two days, signing defensive lineman Treyvon Hester to their 53-man roster. The team announced the move Monday.
Hester joins running back Wendell Smallwood, who the Redskins claimed Sunday off waivers from the Eagles, ahead of their Week 1 season opener at Philadelphia.
Washington also added linebacker Chris Odom to their 10-man practice squad.
Hester played 12 games last season with the Eagles after being waived by the Oakland Raiders ahead of the 2018 season. Hester was the player that tipped Cody Parkey’s 43-yard field goal attempt to help propel the Eagles to a 16-15 wild card game win over the Chicago Bears.
Adding Hester puts the Redskins at 52 players on their roster and gives them six defensive lineman. Defensive line is arguably the Redskins’ strongest unit with Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne and Matt Ioannidis as starters.
But the Redskins’ depth could be in jeopardy for Week 1. Backup nose tackle Tim Settle (knee) and defensive end Caleb Brantley (Linsfranc) have been with injuries throughout the preseason. If either are unable to go, Hester will suit up to face his former team.
The Redskins still have one roster spot opened as they placed running back Shaun Wilson and outside linebacker Jordan Brailford on injured reserve Sunday after their initial announcement of their 53-man roster.
