Robert Davis is back. The Washington Redskins signed the wide receiver to their practice squad Monday just days after they waived him.

Davis was waived Saturday in order to make room for tight end JP Holtz, who the Redskins signed from their practice squad. Holtz was needed as starting tight end Jordan Reed was not cleared from the concussion protocol for Week 1’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Davis went unclaimed on waivers, allowing the team to sign him to the practice squad.

Davis overcame a severe knee injury in 2018 and initially made the 53-man roster after the Redskins final cuts before the start of the regular season. With a need for a third tight end, and already having five other wide receivers set to be active for Philadelphia, Davis was the odd man out.

The team has several injuries to address following Week 1, starting with running back Derrius Guice who had a knee injury in the 32-27 loss to the Eagles. Also there is Colt McCoy’s leg injury that kept him from playing in the preseason, and inactive in Week 1.

Nonetheless, the Redskins seem set at wide receiver. Rookie Terry McLaurin led the team with 5 receptions for 125 yards and a touchdown against Philadelphia. They also have Paul Richardson, Trey Quinn, rookies Kelvin Harmon and Steven Sims Jr. as a return specialist.

It’s unclear if and when Davis would rejoin the Redskins on the 53-man roster, but for now he is an option in-house on the practice squad.
