The Washington Redskins have signed second-year cornerback Simeon Thomas from the Seattle Seahawks practice squad. In a corresponding move, Washington waived fellow second-year cornerback Greg Stroman with an injury designation.
Stroman injured his groin in Sunday’s season opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Virginia Tech product played 20 snaps – 18 on special teams against the Eagles.
There is a chance the Redskins could place Stroman on injured reserve if he clears waivers.
Stroman played in 15 games as a rookie last year, starting in three. He recorded an interception and four pass deflections. Despite the strong first year, he was fell behind on the depth chart with the emergence of seventh-round pick Jimmy Moreland.
Moreland step in as the primary slot corner Sunday in place of the injured Fabian Moreau. And with Quinton Dunbar and Josh Norman set on the outside, Stroman started the season as the fifth cornerback. An injury halters his development and subsequently shuts him down for the 2019 season.
Meanwhile, the Thomas has a ideal frame for a corner at 6-foot-3, 197 pounds. He was taken 53 picks ahead of Stroman in the 2018 NFL Draft, as a sixth-round selection of the Cleveland Browns.
Thomas was waived by the Browns in their cuts before start of last season, but claimed off waivers by the Seahawks. He spent last season on the Seahawks’ practice squad. Despite showing promise, he was waived and placed on the practice squad again in final cuts this year.
Redskins Also Sign DL T.Y. McGill
With injuries to defensive linemen Jonathan Allen (knee) and Caleb Brantley (ankle), the Redskins have become thin at defensive line. The team announced in their series of transactions they’ve signed DL T.Y. McGill.
McGill has played for a number of teams since entering the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2015. He had five sacks in his first two seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. He also spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, and most recently the Los Angeles Chargers. He was waived by the Chargers during final cuts before this season.
Redskins Also Waive TE JP Holtz
The Redskins have waived tight end JP Holtz in a corresponding move to the signing of McGill. He was signed off their practice squad Saturday just ahead of Sunday’s loss to the Eagles. At the time, Washington needed a third tight end and one that could play special teams as Jordan Reed was not cleared from the concussion protocol.
Holtz played 14 special team snaps against the Eagles.
Presumably, the Redskins are hoping he clears waivers to sign back to their practice squad. The team released linebacker Darrell Williams from their practice squad perhaps to make room.
