If the Washington Redskins were hoping to sign tight end JP Holtz to their practice squad, their plan has been foiled. The Chicago Bears announced Wednesday they claimed Holtz off waivers.

The Redskins signed Holtz from their practice squad Saturday, as they needed a third tight end with Jordan Reed not being cleared to play in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Holtz played 14 snaps — all on special teams — in the 32-27 loss.

He was waived Tuesday to make room for their signing of defensive lineman TY McGill following injuries to defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Caleb Brantley. Washington also released linebacker Darrell Williams from the practice squad, opening a spot.

Now, the Redskins are out of a capable option if Reed remains in the concussion protocol for another week.
