Jonathan Allen and the Washington Redskins are awaiting results from a second opinion on his injured knee to see if the star defensive lineman can play Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys, according to Redskins head coach Jay Gruden per the Athletic’s Rhiannon Walker.

Allen’s knee injury is not considered serious and he has yet to be ruled out for Week 2 Gruden added, according to Ben Standig of the Athletic.

Allen had an MRI completed Monday for his suspected MCL sprain. Initially he was being considered week-to-week, but there is optimism that the Alabama product can suit up against the Cowboys.

Allen is a stalwart along the Redskins’ defensive line. He was injured in the first half of last week’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Allen’s leg was caught in the turf as he was blocked to the ground during a double team by the Eagles offensive line.

His absence in the second half was felt, as the Eagles’ run game gained traction without Allen on the field. Philadelphia finished the game with 123 yards and one touchdown on the ground with a 4.0 yards per carry average.

Washington would love to have Allen on the field Sunday in their home opener against Dallas. The Cowboys have one of the better, if not best, offensive line in the NFL. They also have a run game led by Ezekiel Elliott that is potent and dangerous.
