Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice is out indefinitely after undergoing knee surgery Thursday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Guice met with orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Florida earlier Thursday to get a second opinion on his torn meniscus. Ultimately that led to the surgery.
Guice, who missed all of his rookie season last year with a torn ACL, sustained the injury in his non-ACL knee during Sunday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. It was the LSU product’s first NFL regular season game of his career, but he was limited to 18 yards on 10 carries.
Guice shared his thoughts shortly after news broke of the surgery:
Meanwhile, the Redskins will turn to veteran Adrian Peterson to replace Guice as their featured back. Peterson was made inactive in Week 1 in favor of Guice. The decision was met with a lot of backlash towards head coach Jay Gruden.
With Peterson already tabbed the starting running in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys and presumably for the foreseeable future, the 13-year pro said his benching and any dispute with Gruden was “water under the bridge” in a recent interview with JP Finlay of NBC Sports.
As the Redskins move forward with Peterson, Derrius Guice will be looking to recovery from a second major knee injury in two years. Picked in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by Washington, Guice must channel his energy positively to resume his playing career.
