Former Terp Torrey Smith Retires from NFL after Eight Seasons

Two weeks after being released by the Carolina Panthers, wide receiver Torrey Smith is calling it a career. Smith announced his retirement in a video for Uninterrupted, saying “it’s the NFL circle of life.”

Smith spent eight years in the NFL. Before he went on to score 41 touchdowns in the NFL, Smith starred at Maryland in college.

Smith had 152 receptions, 2,215 yards, and 19 touchdowns as a Terrapin. He best game was in his final year at Maryland against then No. 23 NC State in 2010 in which he had a collegiate career-high 14 receptions, 224 yards and four touchdowns. It was Maryland’s last home win against a ranked opponent until Saturday’s win over No. 21 Syracuse.

Smith was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, keeping him in the state of Maryland. With Baltimore he had 213 receptions for 3,591 yards, and 30 touchdowns and won one of his two Super Bowl titles in 2012.

Smith signed with the San Francisco 49ers, spending two seasons in the Bay Area before being released. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, where he won his second Super Bowl title. He was traded the following off-season to the Carolina Panthers where he finished his career.

Torrey Smith finished his career with 319 receptions and 5,141 yards to go with his 41 receiving touchdowns.
