Jordan Reed has made a living torturing the Dallas Cowboys defense. Unfortunately, the Redskins star tight end won’t get the chance Sunday, as he has been ruled out from the game. This will be the second straight game Reed misses as he remains in the concussion protocol.
“Didn’t work out this week in terms of feel healthy for Sunday,” Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said Friday, per Ben Standig of the Athletic.
Reed suffered the concussion on Aug. 22 as a result of a helmet-to-helmet hit during a Week 3 preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. He has remained in the concussion protocol since, three weeks running.
He missed Week 1’s 32-27 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Reed has had six previous documented concussions since 2010, dating back to his college days at Florida. He has also struggled with a multitude of injuries since entering the NFL in 2013.
When healthy, he is the Redskins top receiving target and arguably one of the best tight ends in the NFL. However, he has missed at least three games and as many as 10 in each season of his career.
His absence against the Cowboys may loom. In 10 career games against Dallas, Reed has 51 catches for 534 yards and two touchdowns.
The Redskins will go with Vernon Davis and Jeremy Sprinkle at tight end as they did last week against Philadelphia. With JP Holtz now with the Chicago Bears, Gruden said there’s a chance they’ll promote recently signed tight end Donald Parham to the 53-man active roster.
Reed’s absence adds to the growing list of outs for the Redskins going into Sunday’s game against the Cowboys. Running back Derrius Guice is out indefinitely following knee surgery. Also, defensive linemen Jonathan Allen (knee) and Caleb Brantley (ankle) have been ruled out vs. the Cowboys.
