The Washington Redskins are placing running back Derrius Guice on injured reserve, according to NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay.
Guice had surgery Thursday to trim a torn meniscus from his knee. While officially he is out indefinitely, the timetable for his return is reportedly six-to-eight weeks.
Washington is allowed to return two players this season from the IR. If Guice would be one of those picks, he could return in a minimal of eight weeks which fits the reported timetable of recovery. Now the Redskins can open a roster spot for another player of need on their 53-man roster.
In the meantime, Adrian Peterson, who was made inactive in Week 1, will be the starting featured running back for the Redskins in Guice’s absence.
The Redskins are also placing defensive lineman Caleb Brantley on IR, according to Finlay.
Brantley injured his ankle in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was already ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, however, it appears his injury is more serious.
Like Guice, Brantley can return in eight weeks from IR, if the Redskins select him as one of their two designated players.
