Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said Monday that he is still not decided on who will be the starting quarterback Sunday against the New England Patriots. He stressed he would need to see how Case Keenum’s foot is doing and Colt McCoy’s leg.
Keenum was in a walking boot as precaution Monday. He was pulled from yesterday’s loss the New York Giants in the second quarter after struggling with his foot injury. Rookie and first-round pick Dwayne Haskins replaced Keenum, as McCoy was inactive.
Haskins completed 9-of-17 passes but threw three interceptions, including a pick-six.
McCoy returned to practice last week for the first time during the regular season. He has been recovering from a broken fibula he suffered last December that did not heal properly and required three surgeries.
While Gruden said he needs to see each of his three quarterbacks go through a practice, the stalling sure sounds as if he would prefer McCoy start, if healthy.
McCoy is entering his fifth season with the Redskins — all of which were under Gruden. He has knowledge of the season, and Gruden appears to have confidence in McCoy.
It’s no secret that McCoy had the inside track to being the Week 1 starter this season over Keenum if he had been fully healed. However, he had to essentially be shut down during training camp and did not play in none of Washington’s four preseason games.
McCoy was inactive for each of the Redskins four games thus far this season, and with the team 0-4, and Gruden presumably coaching for his job, who better to turn to?
McCoy knows Gruden’s offense more than Keenum and the young Haskins. And while Keenum has done a relative decent job as the starter, Gruden may feel he has no choice but to throw all his chips on McCoy, the most familiar QB on the roster.
