The Washington Redskins lost to the New England Patriots Sunday by the score of 33-7, dropping them to 0-5 on the season. The last four losses coming by double digits, putting head coach Jay Gruden’s job in jeopardy.

Following the loss to the defending Super Bowl champions, Gruden said no one from the Redskins brass had spoken to him about his job, summing up the situation casually.

“If the key works Monday, I’ll keep working,” Gruden told reporters per John Keim of ESPN.

Gruden entered the season on the hot seat, as the odd-on favorite to be the first NFL coach fired this season. After Washington got off to a 0-3 start, there was a report that he would be fired with a loss last Sunday to the New York Giants. The Redskins lost 24-3.

There have been concerns over his acceptance of rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Gruden played up to the narrative during the week leading into Sunday’s game against the Patriots by avoiding to name a starting quarterback.

He ultimately chose Colt McCoy, who being return for the first time this season from a leg injury he suffered last year. Only for Gruden to admit McCoy starting this week was his plan “long ago.”

McCoy completed 18-of-27 passes for 118 yards and one interception. He was also sacked six times.

Gruden is making no excuses for his shortfalls.

“I have been provided ample opportunities to succeed around here. Good players, good staff. Just haven’t produced on Sundays,” he said per Chad Ryan of Redskins Capital Connection.

With Sunday’s loss Jay Gruden is now 35-49-1 as the Redskins head coach. The team is 1-11 since Alex Smith’s devastating leg injury in November of last season.
