Dwayne Haskins Not Contender to Start for Redskins vs. Dolphins

The good news is now that Jay Gruden is out of the picture as Redskins head coach, the development of rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins is a top priority. However, the bad news is, his development will take time. Interim coach Bill Callahan told reporters Monday during his introductory pressing that Haskins is not a contender to start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Instead the decision of who will start at quarterback will be between veterans Colt McCoy and Case Keenum.

Still, Callahan said “it’s now time” to prepare Haskins to be the starting quarterback. He will get first team reps in practice moving forward, but his NFL starting debut will be later on in the season.

Callahan replaced Gruden as Redskins coach on the interim after a 0-5 start. Haskins reportedly has been lost in the quarterback shuffle under Gruden, despite serving as the backup in each of the first five games.

There’s a good chance Haskins may not even dress against the Dolphins, but it’s clear the long-term development is “very important” over the short-term of him starting against the equally hapless Dolphins.

We’ll have to wait in see how long it will take or how long the Redskins can endure not turning a leaf, handing over the keys of the franchise to Haskins.
