Case Keenum is expected to be named the starting quarterback for the Redskins this week against the Miami Dolphins, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Keenum has been dealing with a foot injury that he suffered in Week 3’s loss to the Chicago Bears. He was pulled midway through the second quarter of Week 4’s loss to the New York Giants in favor of rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins.
Last week, in Jay Gruden’s final game as Redskins head coach, Keenum was inactive as Colt McCoy started at quarterback in a 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots while Haskins served as the backup.
Redskins interim head coach Bill Callahan said Monday that Haskins was not a contender to start this week, leaving the options between Keenum and McCoy.
Keenum has started four games this season, completing 68.1% of his passes for 970 and seven touchdowns against four interceptions. Three of those interceptions came against the Bears.
At this junction, Keenum may be the best option in the Redskins QB carousel. That’s until Haskins is deemed ready to assume the starting QB spot permanently. McCoy may have been more familiar with the Redskins offense under Gruden, he doesn’t have the upside of Haskins, or the abilities of Keenum.
Washington will be looking to avoid an 0-6 start as they face the fellow winless Dolphins (0-4).
