In the wake of Jay Gruden’s firing from the Redskins, there is concern that the Washington job is not desirable by good quality coaches. A large reasoning is the culture of the team. However, former NFL coach turned ESPN analyst Rex Ryan begs to differ to popular opinion.
The twin brother of Redskins inside linebackers coach Rob Ryan, appears to want to throw his hat in the ring for consideration.
“Of course,” Rex Ryan said while appearing on Get Up (h/t Earl Forcey of WJFK. “I would take it… People are going to be lined up for this job.”
Ryan may be right that there will be coaches lined up. But the question, at what quality?
Many detractors point to owner Dan Snyder and team president Bruce Allen being the biggest problems of the Redskins. Their blindness to the foundational issues of the team may prevent any good coach from succeeding there.
Ryan’s interest in the job may not hold much weight as say, Mike Tomlin or Eric Bieniemy, two guys that are rumored to be on Snyder’s wish list. The two may have the luxury of passing up the opportunity to coach the Redskins if they don’t like the organizational fit.
Keep in mind, Rex Ryan has a 61-66 record as an NFL head coach. He spent six seasons as the head coach of the New York Jets and two more with the Buffalo Bills. He had just two winning seasons, however reached the AFC Championship Game in both winning seasons, his first two with the Jets.
Following his 9-7 record in 2009 and 11-5 in 2010, Ryan failed to win more than eight games in each of the next six seasons as a head coach. He was fired from both jobs.
