Alex Smith has had a long road to recovery from his gruesome compound fracture in which he suffered a broken fibula and tibia last November in a game against the Houston Texans. That much is public knowledge. He underwent numerous surgeries for repair and fight infections caused by the severity of the injury. What is not known is that the Redskins quarterback may have underwent 17 surgeries on his broken leg.
According to Thom Loverro of the Washington Times, Smith told a group of invited medical professionals at the Inova Sports medicine that he underwent 17 surgeries on his leg.
According to Loverro’s sources, there was a “gasp” from the crowd when Smith revealed the insane amount of procedures.
The Redskins have not and will not comment on Smith’s recovery.
Smith wore the external fixator for reportedly eight months. He was first spotted wearing the device at a January Wizards game. In July the device was removed. He has since been seen various times around Redskins Park.
On Monday, Smith was throwing passes while dropping back, according to Rhiannon Walker of The Athletic. He had a compression sleeve over his surgically repaired right leg
Smith has been a regular around Redskins Park. He has been a part of team meetings. He still hopes to resume his playing career, as soon as 2020, but has acknowledged the road to that will be difficult, as it has already.
