The Washington Nationals and Houston Astros were locked in a 2-2 tie through six innings after both teams each posted two runs in the first. That is until Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki broke the tie with a lead-off home run off Justin Verlander in the seventh.
Suzuki entered Game 2 in a 1-for-23 postseason slump. He seemingly broke out of that slump with two hits Wednesday against Verlander. The second was a blast for the first of six runs by the Nationals in the seventh.
Back-to-back walks to Victor Robles and Trea Turner by Verlander ultimately led to his night ending. After a two-out intentional walk to Juan Soto to load the bases Ryan Pressly gave up a RBI-single to Howie Kendrick to extend the Nationals’ lead to 4-2.
Then, Asdrubal Cabrera bust the game open with a two-run single. The next batter with Ryan Zimmerman at the plate, Pressly threw a wild pitch allowing both Cabrera and Kendrick to advance to second and third.
Zimmerman took full advantage of the erratic reliever, delivering an infield single to third that led to an Alex Bregman error that allowed Kendrick and Cabrera to score.
Just like that a 2-2 tie busted open to an 8-2 lead for the Nationals, who now are nine outs away from taking a commanding 2-0 series lead in the World Series.
