Anthony Rendon Hammers Two-Run HR after Controversial Play

They say the ball don’t lie. And that appeared to be the case in the seventh inning when Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon hammered a two-run home run to extend Washington’s lead to 5-2 in Game 6 of the World Series.

The bizarre sequence started when Trea Turner appeared to beat out a throw from Houston Astros pitcher Brad Peacock for an infield single. Peacock’s errand throw got by Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel, leading to Turner reaching second base and Yan Gomes moving from first to third.

However, umpire Jim Wolf called Turner out for interfering Gurriel’s attempt to catch Peacock’s throw.

Turner and Nationals manager Dave Martinez were livid. Initially umpires didn’t go to replay because the play was deemed not subject to challenge. However, they ultimately decided to review the play. The Nationals then continued the game in protest.

As he was being held back at the top of the dugout by Asdrubal Cabrera, Turner was seen and heard making reference to Joe Torre, MLB’s chief baseball officer, during the lengthy video review. Unfortunately, the play was upheld and Turner was called out. Gomes returned to first base.

Martinez was later ejected from the game after arguing more with home plate umpire Sam Holbrook. Martinez had to be held back by Nationals bench coach Chip Hale.

Two batters later Rendon crushed a two-run blast off Astros pitcher Will Harris. Like they say, the ball don’t lie.
