There was a lot said in the aftermath of the controversial interference play Tuesday’s Game 6 of the World Series. Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner was called out for what appeared to be an infield single in the seventh inning.
Umpire Jim Wolf called Turner out for interferening with Houston Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel’s ability to field an errand throw from pitcher Brad Peacock.
The sequence had Nationals manager Dave Martinez firing off at both Wolf and home plate umpire Sam Holbrook. Turner had to be held back by teammates and when the Nationals were not happy with the umps ruling the play was not reviewable, the umpires reviewed the play anyways. Just to uphold the call on the field. In the midst of the situation, Turner campaigned for the umpires to ask MLB’s chief baseball officer about the ruling.
Anthony Rendon then hit a two-run homer two batters later. But that was enough for Martinez, who berated Wolf and Holbrook during the seventh-inning stretch.
The Twitter account of Jomboy did a great NSFW breakdown of the entire sequence, including what the Nationals said to the umpires during the ordeal.
The entire breakdown will have you laughing. But its shows the degree of importance for every call in the World Series. The Nationals have appeared to be on the short end of the umpire’s judgement calls. Martinez’s frustration boiling over is understandble.
